Mood and Mystery
A memorial of mood and mystery from the last seasons reflection and discovery.
Step into my world.
Island’s west side and a mid-summer sunset late in the day. Gold light against Madrone. Colors of turquois, blue and green. All the shades of red. Background chatter of campers and sightseers. Smells of bonfires and barbeques. Festive and warm. People on holiday. Happy summers eve.
Sun shining through cedar as it reflects off water. Last time I get to see this day. The sun is gliding away. I am meditative and mesmerized by the glitter on the water. All the colors bouncing with glimmer. I am glad to be alone. Just me and all the sparkles.
Fall drifts in and mist rises in a thin veil as if illuminating an alternate world.
Distant hills shrouded with mystery. Contemplative and moody. The light is not quite as bright and the dark more of a gray. Subtle and sweet. Soft and comforting.
In my studio I recall shapes, colors, lines and form. I remember smells and sounds, memorialize the place with paint. I begin with thin layers of oily warm transparent hues, mutating into thick painterly brush marks. Each layer stamps the recollection of that days’ time in the woods, the pieces unfold in a contemplative divinatory manner.
The finished piece is a mosaic of light, weaving and interlacing patterns and color. Like stained glass, they represent the mystery beneath the surface, the layer woven between worlds. I paint this island as sanctuary. A woodland temple and shelter from the storm.
