Artist's Statement

David's precise and lush etchings of disembodied botanical subjects coupled with ruins, towns, archeological and architectural references are updates of classical themes and imagery. His pieces have a secretive and somewhat haunting quality. The images are complex with layers of intaglio including: aquatint etching, photogravure, mezzotint, hard & soft ground, and dry point.

“I approach the making of images seriously and hope that they will reveal something poetic and universally true about the human condition. Converting ideas into marks and lines on the paper or printing plate excites my mind and invigorates my imagination. When this goes well, it provides intense pleasure which delights me and enriches my life, and hopefully the lives of others."

David’s intaglios are in all the major institutions that are the repositories of world class printmaking, including the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, in San Francisco and in the permanent collections of many institutions and corporations including The Fine Art Museum of San Francisco, Tama Art University Museum, Tokyo; Utah State University, Logan, Utah; Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah; Southwest Texas State University , San Marcos, Texas; Nordstrom, Seattle; George Lucas, Lucas Films, San Raphael, California; Time Warner, NYC and Warner Brothers, Los Angeles, CA
