david ridgway’s oil painted landscapes reflects a joy and love for his environment. whether painting plein aire or in his studio his images of the hills, valleys, boats, and houses of the san juan’s and skagit counties are an appreciative expression of the beauty of the pacific northwest. this group of new oil paintings was started in the fall of 2005 and completed in august 2006. many of the paintings continue to investigate the relationship between man and the rural and sub rural landscape. architectural and atmospheric elements are prominent.

several of the pieces were done in series with a preliminary work done on recycled commercially printed surfaces. these works retain some of the arbitrary ‘underpainting’ thus creating visual tension while establishing the key and palette.

a small group of abstract works on deconstructed boxes was inspired by the cigar box top paintings of richard diebenkorn and the earlier modernists.

all works are framed by the artist.
