beginning with form,
sketching lines and movement
small models in clay littering the studio;
the smallest overcoming many of the physics problems faced with the mass of the larger forms
laying out the larger forms
waiting, timing

minding the humidity, the temperature, the sunlight—
in my small studio the weather is everything
shaping the lines, smoothing curves, tightening angles
waiting again

smoothing clay particles and sand into place, compression
all clay has memory of how it has been layed out and pieced together
mindful of this memory that affects the strength of a curve; memory revealed as
texture is added, enforced in the firing

lifting a piece, defying physics, finding supports; blocking, taping
waiting—humidity, sunlight, temperature

refining curves, angles to create strength, add subtlety, reach, movement
stepping outside to see from a different light

laying in texture, each tool unique as it works with the memory of the clay, creating
divots and imperfections to hold the eye,
          lines to move it along

planning the additions, imprinting the connections. rolling and compressing to find the cracks
the surface; simplicity,
copper, the smooth wax of terra sig.

concrete, quicker now, waiting but the roughness and tension of texture, duct tape
chartreuse, it is so alive and frivolous
brass, undo the shine, pound, scratch, age

seeing form,
held by an addition,
pulled by a line,
layers of texture reveal more.

holly durham is featured in a trio showing for our november 2007 exhibit
